Lunveil comes from the contraction of lune (moon) and veil (veil). A handpan is a lunar steel shell that only reveals its timbre the moment a hand touches it: the sound is unveiled beneath the fingers. This is the idea behind the name.
We work with partner manufacturers specializing in steel instruments. Each model is chosen based on three criteria: tuning accuracy, sustain length, and the finish quality of the shell. The tuning is checked before shipping. Our instruments are not manufactured in US : they are selected, checked, and shipped by us.
Yes. All instruments offered on Lunveil are new, unplayed, and delivered in their original packaging with their accessories.
The handpan consists of two joined steel shells, with hand-hammered areas called tone fields: it is played with bare hands, and each note requires a precise strike. The tongue drum is a steel sphere in which tongues are cut; it is played with mallets or fingers and is significantly more accessible. The tongue drum is a natural gateway to the handpan.
The D Kurd is a minor scale built on a D ding. It is the most widespread scale and the most recommended for beginners: all the notes sound good together, regardless of the order in which they are played. Therefore, it is impossible to play a wrong note, which allows for improvisation from the very first session.
A 9-note handpan offers simple reference points and a comfortable playing experience: it is the format to start with. A 10 to 12-note model expands the melodic range and is suitable when you feel limited by a 9-note, generally after a few months of practice.
440 Hz is the international reference pitch: it is the choice to make if you want to play with other instruments or record. 432 Hz is slightly lower; its sound is perceived as rounder and it is often chosen for solo practice. The layout of the notes is identical in both cases.
Four reliable signs: the note layout is announced note by note; the tuning frequency is specified (440 or 432 Hz); the material is indicated (stainless steel or nitrided steel); the tuning is checked before shipping. A seller who does not communicate any of these details rarely sells a tuned instrument. On Lunveil, the exact layout of the notes appears on every product page.
Our handpans are made of stainless steel or nitrided steel depending on the model; the exact material is specified on each product page. Stainless steel offers a longer sustain and requires no anti-corrosion treatment. Nitrided steel has a warmer and shorter timbre.
A handpan weighs between 3 and 5 kg depending on the model, with a diameter of approximately 50 to 55 cm. A tongue drum is significantly lighter and more compact. The exact dimensions and weight are indicated in the specifications table of each product page.
A tongue drum is suitable from age 6 or 7: it is played with mallets and requires no technique. A handpan requires more controlled striking, and a 4 kg instrument remains bulky for a child: we recommend it from age 12 onwards.
No. These instruments are tuned to a single scale: all notes harmonize with each other. Our two learning methods are written without music theory, using visual and rhythmic references.
Wipe the surface with a dry microfiber cloth after each session to remove moisture from your hands. Stainless steel does not require oiling. Avoid leaving the instrument in direct sunlight, in a vehicle, or in a humid room, and store it flat in its bag.
A well-made handpan stays in tune for several years if played normally. The real causes of detuning are shocks, overly violent strikes, and sudden temperature variations. Never place heavy objects on the shell.
The handpan is played with bare hands: mallets are discouraged as they risk marking the shell. The tongue drum is played with mallets or fingers, as you prefer; a pair of mallets is provided with our tongue drums.
