A handpan cannot be understood by reading about it. It is understood by placing your hands on it. Lunveil was born from this simple conviction: selling an instrument is not about lining up photos and prices, but about giving someone the means to know what they are buying before they ever touch it.
A handpan is a steel shell. Two assembled half-spheres, a surface hammered into tonal fields, and nothing else: no electronics, no mechanics, no adjustments. All the music lies in the precision of the hammering.
It is this contrast that interests us. The material is cold, industrial, mineral. The sound that emerges is enveloping, long, almost vocal. A good instrument maintains this tension: it sounds in tune effortlessly, it resonates for a long time, and it remains in tune years later. A bad instrument, on the other hand, looks like a handpan without actually being one.
Lunveil comes from the contraction of two words: lune (moon), for the grey steel shell whose surface evokes a lunar landscape, and veil. A handpan reveals nothing until you touch it. It remains silent, closed, opaque. Then your hand is placed upon it, and the sound is unveiled.
We launched Lunveil after noticing a recurring problem in this market: the buyer spending 900 euros has almost no way of verifying what they are purchasing. The ads look the same, the photos are interchangeable, and the information that truly matters—the exact layout of the notes, the pitch, the material of the shell—is often absent. In a niche where non-tuned copies circulate massively, this silence is not neutral: it benefits those who sell instruments that are not truly instruments at all.
Our response fits in one line: tell everything, on every product page.
We do not manufacture our instruments. We select them from partner manufacturers specializing in steel instruments, and then we check the tuning before shipment. We prefer to state this clearly rather than maintain ambiguity regarding an alleged French artisanal manufacture: it would be false, and you would discover it upon opening the package.
Selection is based on three non-negotiable criteria. First, the accuracy of the tuning: each note must sound at the announced frequency, and the harmonics must be aligned—this is precisely what copies cannot do. Second, the length of sustain: a note must continue to live for several seconds after being struck, without fading away abruptly. Finally, the quality of the shell: uniform thickness, clean welding, flawless finish, because a poorly finished instrument goes out of tune quickly.
On every product page, we publish the complete note layout, note by note, for each variant. The pitch is specified. The material is indicated. The diameter, height, and weight are included in a table visible without having to scroll down. This is the information that allows for comparing two instruments, and that is exactly why it is missing elsewhere.
Our range is organized like a journey. The tongue drum is the entry point: simple, light, accessible from the very first minute. The 9-note handpan comes next, with clear markers and a D Kurd scale on which it is impossible to play a wrong note. 10 to 12-note models expand the melodic range when practice demands it. Our Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced collections follow this logic rather than a simple price-based ranking.
Because you will know what you are buying. The layout of the notes is displayed, the tuning is checked, and our blog articles explain how to recognize a truly tuned instrument—even when it is not sold by us. We also write our two learning methods in-house, without musical notation, so that the instrument can be used from the very first day instead of remaining on its stand.
We sell instruments for several hundred euros to people who have never touched them. This creates specific obligations, which are as follows:
